Hi JK families!
What’s underneath our skin? Thanks to the shine a light book, The Human Body by Carron Brown, the children were able to take a peek inside. We lowered the lights (even more than usual), got out a flashlight and went on a visual adventure to see all the parts that make up the wonderfully complex human body! They learned about the human skeleton, musculatory system, circulatory system, organs and nervous system. Later in the week they took another look inside thanks to the classic Magic School Bus episode, “Inside Ralphie.” We couldn’t have a special screening without a ticket purchasing experience and popcorn! The kiddos were all given a pretend five dollar bill. They were then invited to line up and purchase their ticket at a register with Miss Gina or Miss Liz. A small cup of popcorn was included in the price of the ticket! Miss Melanie ripped tickets and served popcorn. The children quietly made their way into their “theater” and enjoyed the special story about traveling inside Ralphie’s sick body!

We welcomed a special guest to our classroom this week as well! Dr. Loren Kaiser, a pediatrician and WCDS parent, was kind enough to spend some time with us. She brought several doctor’s tools and let the kiddos try them out. First, they listened to her heartbeat and then each other’s using a stethoscope. Then they tested their friend’s reflexes using a knee hammer, and looked in their ears, mouth, or nose using an otoscope. In preparation for our special guest, we took some time to talk to the children about going to the doctor and this is what they had to say:
Levi- I’m not scared of them. They fix your teeth.
Avery- um um when I went to the doctor my brother had an ear infection and they looked in his throat and they put a popsicle in his throat and he did ok.
Leland- I was coughing at my moms and I threw up in my bed.
Kemper- When my ear was hurting, they help my ear.
Donato- I was sick so I went.
Brody- They checked my ear because water gets in them.
Nala- I went to the doctors because my tummy was hurting. They took a picture with an x (x-ray).
Atticus- Me too! I had to get an x-ray when I broke my leg.
Sebastian- A sethascope! When I went to the doctors he gave me a shot in one of my elbows I don’t know which one.
Abigail- When I went to the doctors the doctor gave me a shot in my leg.
Gemma- I went to the doctors and got two shots in both arms (points to arms).
Clara- I went to the doctors and got a flu shot.
Ripley-I got an x-ray with my mom and with my dad.
Audrey- I got an x-ray.
Ben- I had an echo when I went to the doctors.
Destry- my mom brought me to the dentist and there were germs in my teeth. I swallowed a fish and they cut it off.
Lincoln- My doctor said I don’t have to go again until I’m 5.
Avery- I don’t have to get shots again until I’m 6.
Ben- My doctor checks how big I am.
We also transformed a corner of the classroom into a doctor’s office equipped with everything you need to examine and treat patients, in this case stuffed animals. We have to say, the Band-Aids were everyone’s favorite!

Last week the children created the human body using clay, this week we used foil! Every kiddo shaped a head, body, arms, and legs by scrunching the foil into position. We have some big ideas for a wonderful display of these striking sculptures.

In literacy, we reviewed short Ee and played “freeze dance erase the e’s.” The children danced, and when the music stopped they ran to find and uppercase or lowercase Ee and erased it using the proper letter formation tracing. We also took on the letter Ll this week! The children worked hard to make it’s correct sound and formation, and added lots of words to our word webs, including the names of our classmates: Lennon, Lincoln, Leland, and Levi! We also reviewed all the letter sounds we’ve learned so far by playing an auditory sound game. We said a sound and the children had to sit in the chair with the letter that made that sound.

In math we introduced the number 11 and made a human 10 frame plus 1 = 11! When we split the class into our small groups, there are 11 children on each side, so we knew assigning numbers to each child would be the perfect way to show the number 11. We also reviewed how to write numbers 1-11!

We wish you a wonderful spring break!
