Hello 2nd Grade Families!

What a full and fun week we have had in our classroom! There has been so much learning, creativity, and even a little cooking happening. 😊

💬 Conversation Starters

  • What words did you read this week with ea that says long e?
  • How do you count coins the fastest?
  • What kind of poem did you like writing best?
  • If you were president, what problem would you solve first?
  • What did you think about the fruit pizza? Would you make it again?

📚 This week in phonics we focused on the vowel team ea that says long e (like in bead, read, clean, and dream). Students practiced reading and spelling words with this pattern and worked hard to notice when ea makes that long e sound. Keep an eye out for these words in books at home!

💰In math, we began learning how to count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We practiced counting each coin individually and then worked on counting mixed groups of coins in the most efficient way. By the end of the week, students were combining all four coins and showing great strategies for counting up to find the total amount. You might try giving your child a handful of change and asking them to show you their strategy!

✏️ We kicked off our poetry unit and explored three different types of poems: acrostic, color, and cinquain.  Students loved playing with words and expressing their ideas in creative ways. It has been wonderful seeing their imaginations come to life on paper!

🏛️ We’ve been learning about the responsibilities of the President of the United States, Governor, and Mayor.  Students worked in groups representing each leader and discussed how they would solve problems at the city, state, or country level. They had thoughtful ideas about fixing roads, making laws, helping communities, and keeping people safe. It was so impressive to hear their problem-solving skills and teamwork!

🍓 We wrapped up our week with Kids in the Kitchen and made fruit pizzas! Students helped spread the cream cheese and honey mixture and added colorful fruit toppings. Many were surprised by how much they loved the cream cheese and honey combination. It was such a fun (and tasty!) way to end the week.

Thank you for your continued support at home. We are so proud of how hard your children are working and growing each day. Have a wonderful, relaxing break! 🌟
